Because in an industry where data is everything, usability is what makes that data valuable.

The construction and surveying industries generate tons of data from drawings, site scans, BIM models, drone imagery, and more. As technology advances, this data is becoming richer and more detailed. But there’s a problem: powerful tools are only useful if people can actually use them. 🤔

Software in this space has prioritised features over usability, creating complex systems that require extensive training or mental gymnastics. The real future of construction data isn’t just about more advanced technology - it’s about making that technology simple and accessible to everyone.

The Complexity Problem

Data is only valuable if it leads to action. But in many construction projects, useful information is buried in difficult to navigate systems, locked behind confusing interfaces or scattered across multiple tools that don’t communicate well. This complexity slows down decision-making, increases the risk of errors, and creates barriers for those who aren’t technical specialists.

I've seen these problems across the industry:

  • 😕 Surveying teams struggle to share data in formats that others can easily interpret.
  • 😡 Site managers receive reports they can’t open without specialist software.
  • 😤 Architects and engineers spend time translating data rather than acting on it.

In an ideal world, construction professionals wouldn’t have to worry about file formats, compatibility issues, or clunky interfaces. They would simply have the information they need, when they need it, in a form they can immediately use.

A Career-Long Passion for Delightful UX

Throughout my career, I’ve been obsessed with creating software that doesn’t just work but delights the user. From early experiments like gamification 🎮 with Botty Town and the fun 🥳 Tipstrr ROI Widget to my work today, I’ve always believed that great UX isn’t just about making things look nice. It’s about removing frustration and making complex tasks feel effortless.

This passion is what drives my approach at Vismo. I don’t just want to build powerful tools. I want to make sure that every interaction feels smooth, intuitive and enjoyable. Because in an industry where data is everything, usability is what makes that data valuable.

How Vismo Tackles UX for Complex Data

At Vismo, we believe that the future of AEC data is about reducing friction, not adding complexity. Our approach to UX is driven by a few core principles:

  1. Show, Don’t Tell – Data should be visual, intuitive and contextual. Instead of overwhelming users with long tabular layouts, Vismo presents information in a way that’s easy to interpret and just when you need it. Whether it’s a site plan, a 3D model, or a set of annotations.
  2. Eliminate Unnecessary Steps – Every extra click, every confusing button, every complicated menu slows people down. We obsess over removing unnecessary complexity, so users can focus on their work, not the software.
  3. Make Collaboration Effortless – Data is only useful when it can be shared and understood by the right people. Vismo is designed to remove barriers between teams in the most streamlined way possible.
  4. Everyone-First Design – Journeys should be accessible to as many people as possible without discrimination, projects like A11y are critical for the future of technology and we're soon to see EU and UK legislation enforcing it further.

Closing Thoughts

The future of construction data isn’t just about better technology—it’s about making data more usable. That’s why UX is critical. It determines whether insights are acted on or ignored, whether teams collaborate effectively or work in silos, and whether innovation actually reaches the people on the ground.

At Vismo, our mission is to make complex data accessible to everyone, not just technical specialists. Because the real game-changer isn’t just more data, it’s the ability to use it.
